The famous designer Jean Paul Gaultier entered the fashion world without any formal training. He pestered renowned designers with his own sketches until fashion designer Pierre Cardin hired him as his assistant.

Jean Paul Gaultier changed mentors several times, and in 1976 he presented his first collection. He was soon dubbed the "enfant terrible" (terrible child) of the French fashion scene.

Gaultier was by no means highly respected at the time, but he was original. He quietly drew his inspiration from the French streets and sent tattooed models and curvy women down the runway. He did the same with his perfumes.

The women's perfume Classic packed Jean Paul Gaultier into a torso with breasts. Le Male , currently one of the best-selling men's fragrances in Europe, is promoted in advertising by a sailor with flowers tattooed on his nipples.
