Chanel No. 5 is the world's most famous perfume and was created in 1921. At that time, Coco Chanel asked the renowned perfume designer Ernest Beaux to create an exciting new women's fragrance that would fit the image of the company she had founded. The designer gave Coco several fragrances to choose from, of which she liked the sample, No. 5, the most—the name remained unchanged. In 1986, Jacques Polge reinterpreted the composition of his predecessor Ernest Beaux, creating a fuller, more voluminous version of the eternal feminine fragrance: Eau de Parfum.
At the time of its release, No. 5 was a revolutionary perfume—while all previous fragrances had focused on the scent of a single floral species, this rule was broken here, creating a rich olfactory bouquet: rose, jasmine, and ylang-ylang from the Comoros were combined with synthetically derived aldehydes that enhanced and highlighted the floral scent. It was a breakthrough in perfumery, art and technology rolled into one!
Coco Chanel herself was the first to use this perfume, and actresses Catherine Deneuve and Carole Bouquet also appreciated its charm. When asked what she wore to bed, Marilyn Monroe simply replied: Chanel No. 5. Even today, it remains synonymous with beauty, elegance, and chic...
